The fastest Wi-Fi fix in a Paintsville house is not a new password
One router in the living room cannot punch through a two-story house and a metal-roof shop. Here is what actually works in Eastern Kentucky homes.
Why the living-room router always fails here
People buy a bigger router the way they buy a louder soundbar. The living room gets great, the bedroom dies, the shop never had a chance. Radio does not care that you spent $300.
Eastern Kentucky houses are not apartments with one drywall wall. They are two stories, a metal roof, a cinder-block addition, and a shop twenty yards off the kitchen. The ISP gateway in a cabinet is the worst place to start a wireless network, and that is where most of them sit.
Mesh vs. one box vs. real access points
Mesh (or access points on Ethernet) beats a single screaming box. Put a node where the signal actually dies, not where the furniture looks nice.
If the house already has Ethernet, use it. Wireless backhaul mesh is a compromise. Wired backhaul is what offices do. We will tell you which you have and which is worth pulling.
Guest Wi-Fi is not optional
If you are still typing a Wi-Fi password into every toaster, we will also split guest traffic off the computers. That is a thirty-minute change and it stops a lot of “the internet is fine except the office PC.”
Kids’ devices, cameras you already own, and the cousin’s laptop at Thanksgiving should not sit on the same network as the tax folder. That is not paranoia. That is a VLAN with a polite name.
